The first act of architecture is
to enclose / protect / shelter. It is solid. I am
interested in the moment when that protective clothing
/ shelter begins to open, unwrap, split or slide apart.
This is the second act of architecture; the re-opening
up of internal spaces to receive natural light and
reconnect with the external realm. This is void. This
is when light begins. With the light comes realisation
of form and realisation of space and thus, architecture.
Concurrently, these openings directly influence the
external reading of the object. I believe and want
to prove in my thesis that the experience of architecture
is created not by the building of solid, but by the
subsequent subtracting from or ‘opening’
of this solid.
